Hang the rod 6 inches above the window frame for a standard look.

When you re figuring out the curtain and rod placement remember to account for how the curtain hangs on the rod hooks rings tabs grommets or pockets.

If you mount a curtain rod with a screw over time you will end up with a sagging curtain and hole.
Drywall may look solid enough but it won t hold a screw and if you mount a curtain rod improperly you ll end up with a sagging curtain and a hole to patch.
Put the main curtain rod in place.
In the typical recently built house this means getting your screws through the drywall and into a stud.
Attach curtain rings if they are part of your setup.
Hang the curtains and double check to make sure your brackets are still secure.
If you re not using a double rod you can skip this step.
The curtain curtain rod combo is heavy enough that in an ideal situations your brackets would go into wood.
Using drywall anchors is the only solution.
However studs are only found every 16 24 inches so it s unlikely there would be one everywhere you want to put a bracket.
